In the Art Room - Shoes

This is one I do every year - shoe drawings!  My kids wear uniforms, so when we begin the final drawing for this assignment they are allowed to wear any shoes they like to school because that is the shoe they will draw.  This is always a winning assignment for me and the kids!
I don't know why I can't stop Blogger from turning my pictures sideways!!!!  Anyone else have this problem?

In the Art Room - Sailboats

Here's one I did with my first graders.  The lesson was on differentiazting between seascapes, landscapes, and cityscapes.  We also learned how to create different textures with paint.

In the Art Room - Unity Crayons

I took this almost step for step from Mini Matisse, one of my new favorite art blogs!  First we looked at several examples of fine art pieces and discussed which we believed were unified and which were not.  Then we discussed what factors we would need to create independent pieces that when displayed together, would create one unified project.  The kids were more thoughtful with this project than I thought they would be.  I saw many discussions over the 3 class periods it took to finish this project on how to create a flow from one piece to the next.  Thank you Mini Matisse!

In the Art Room - Rockets in Space

I wanted to show the Kinders a different way to use a paint brush.  I usually emphasize using their brushes to make long paint strokes, which they have really improved on since the year began.  So today we used our brushes to splatter paint the galaxy behind a cut paper rocket ship.  They loved it!

In the Art Room - Jellyfish

This didn't turn out quite as I hoped.  I liked the compositions much better before we added the backgrounds.  The blue paint overpowered the jellyfish.  The kids really enjoyed the process though.  We painted watery half circles, then picked our papers up and tapped them on the table until each half circle dripped long lines down the page.  These are some where the kids used a light hand in applying the blue paint.  The majority have a dark blue background which really took away the details of the jellyfish.

In the Art Room - 3D Letters

I've been pushing myself to create more 3D art projects this year.  My 8th graders have spent the last 6 weeks working on these letters and they are wonderful!  I encouraged them to design around the entire letter to entice the viewer to observe from all sides.  I used papier-mache tape for the first time - it's like wallpaper where you have the gluey side and the non-gluey side.  It worked great and there was a lot less clean up afterwards!

In the Art Room - Tessellations

My 7th grades make tessellations every year.  This year I had a TON of late assignments.  I hate sending artwork home with kids because I usually don't get it back.  I'd love to hear some of your suggestions with how you deal with late work or work that never makes it back to the art room.
