In the Art Room - Lions

The kinders finished up their lion paintings and they are wonderful! 

     

I always begin their projects with one line or shape and then have the kids build upon that start.  For the lions, the kids all began with a "U" drawn on their paper.  They used their knowledge of lines and geometric shapes for the rest.

In the Art Room - Typography

I'm always looking for new ways to engage the middle school students.  Recently I gave each 8th grader a candy bar wrapper and had them draw the wrapper, replacing the candybar's name with their own name (or a version of their name).  The challenge was to use the same typography of the candybar name when inserting their own name.

        

In the Art Room - Blue Dog

One project I do every year with the Kindergarten is Blue Dog.  The kids love looking at all the different ways Georges Rodrigue painted Blue Dog.  We begin with a directed drawing of the dog and then they add a colorful, abstract background.  We also use this lesson to review warm and cool colors.

In the Art Room - Color Theory

Color theory is a standard for the 5th grade curriculum.  This year we created paintings inspired by the work of Alma Woodsey Thomas to demonstrate the relationships between complimentary, monochromatic and analogous colors.  The students had a difficult time at first making all their colors relate, but they got the hang of it and their work is gorgeous!

In the Art Room - St. Patrick's Day

I have a general rule of keeping the Kindergarten projects short and sweet.  We rarely have a lesson that lasts more than 45 minutes.  This week they have been working on paintings of lions.  More to come on this later!
Last week we reviewed primary and secondary colors with a St. Patrick's Day lesson.

       

In addition to putting their rainbows in ROYGBV order, each child had to make a symmetrical black pot.
